The promise of clean water for the village of Thullukudiyiruppu

On June 13, 2025, the foundation stone was laid for a much-needed reverse osmosis (RO) water purification system in the village of Thullikudirippu in the Mannar District.

Thullikudirippu is a rural village in the Pesalai area under the Mannar Urban Divisional Secretariat. The majority of residents are from the Tamil community and earn their livelihood through fishing and daily wage labor.

Currently, the villagers depend on well water for drinking. However, this water has been found to be unsafe for consumption, causing significant health concerns. The nearby school in the village has also been affected by the lack of clean drinking water.

Thullikudirippu was also highlighted during the 2023 Gammadda Door-to-Door initiative as a community facing urgent water challenges.

This vital project is being funded in memory of the late Dr. Thiyagarajah Nagendra, a former resident of Rosmead Place, Kurunduwatta, Colombo. The financial contribution has been generously provided by retired chartered accountant Mr. P. Sivendra and his wife, currently residing in Wellawatte.
