A Community-Driven Project Launched at Trincomalee Moravewa North Sinhala School

Located in the remote village of Morawewa North in the Trincomalee District, Trincomalee Morawewa North Sinhala School is classified as an underprivileged school. With approximately 100 students and a dedicated team of 14 teachers, the school serves as a vital educational hub for the local community.

The school lies in a predominantly multi-ethnic village where most residents rely on agriculture for their livelihood. This village is home to many families who were resettled in the aftermath of the civil conflict. Children from these families now receive their education at the Morawewa North Sinhala School.

One of the most pressing issues faced by both the school and the surrounding community is the lack of access to clean drinking water. Currently, the school community depends on a well and a pump system, but tests have confirmed that this water is not suitable for consumption. This problem is especially concerning as the village has reported cases of kidney disease, which are believed to be linked to unsafe water sources.

In response to this crisis, and under the leadership of the Gammadda, a new initiative was launched on June 4, 2025, to establish a reverse osmosis water purification system on the school grounds. This system aims to provide safe drinking water to both the students and the broader village community.

This project is being implemented under the 2025 Gammedda from Door to Door initiative, which identified the school as a priority location.

The financial support for this vital project comes from Ms. Chitra de Silva, the proprietor of Oasis Plants and Seeds Exporters, based in Colombo 03. She made this generous donation in memory of her late parents and brother.

In parallel, the Gammedda movement, in collaboration with Google Benevity, also launched the first phase of a national nutrition supplement program for expectant mothers as part of the same event.

Adding further significance to the occasion, Claire Lopez from Brown University, USA, who is currently partnering with Gammedda for a residential training initiative, participated in the ceremony. This marks her first field visit with the Gammedda program in Sri Lanka.
