Summary

Residents of Seenipura Village (~111 families) are experiencing an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Diseases due to their contaminated water supply.

Challenge

Seenipura in the Kantale DS division is located in the Trincomalee District. Seenipura is home to 105 families. Sinhalese and Muslims coexist in harmony The residents are mainly dairy farmers and daily wage laborers. People in the area struggle daily with no access to clean drinking water. Thus, they are forced to make a multikilometers trek to collect water from a nearby village or purchase water for their drinking and other needs. They currently have a 5 foot well which has to be deepened. They also have a tube well in the premises of the local temple that is contaminated. This will be the source for the RO plant. The local school has a student population of 250 and the local Sunday school has a student population of 175. People from the village have requested Gammadda to install an R.O plant to ensure a consistent clean drinking water supply. There are two potential locations for the well which are the local school and temple. This will not only benefit the 111 families who live in Seenipura but also the future staff of the planned sugar factory and their families.

Solution

Gammadda commenced work on installing an RO Plant in the village of Seenipura using the tube well as a water source. Further a water storage and distribution system in a common location will provide the residents of Seenipura and neighboring villages with access to clean drinking water free of harmful pollutants. Further, it will reduce the incidence rate of water borne illnesses in the resident population. Moreover, Gammadda will introduce a preventive and periodic maintenance plan to ensure project longevity by forming a Gammadda Saviya.
